Education, on the other hand, is something over which we can take more control although there often isn’t much of an incentive to learn about good health when you are scraping for your next meal.
The predominance of fast food is an example - cheap, ubiquitous/easy access, tasty. This unhealthy food source tends to become a predominant food source as it is easy and cheap. Just take note of how much of fast-food advertising is aimed at minority populations.
Reliance on this source is definitely under our control but socio-economic and education levels prevent people from making better nutrition decisions.
In a perfect world, we would all equally learn what is good for us and what isn’t. But we don’t - and we won’t. Much of what is bad is hidden from us and we aren’t inclined to seek out the information that would help protect our health. We’re too busy and too “trusting” of the purveyors of the products that we eat and use in our daily lives.
Bottom line is that there are uncontrollable circumstances against which our best defense is a healthy immune system which means exercising more control of the elements of good health that we can control.
As a culture, we don’t do well in that area as evidenced by the lifestyle-related illnesses that are dominating our population e.g. obesity, diabetes, heart disease.
